I installed the 3.17.0-031700rc6 kernel packages, restarted with it and
still have the same problem. I later got v1.127.7 of the linux-firmware
package, restarted and I'm still unable to connect to any wireless
networks.

I have this issue on Linux Mint 17, which is built on Ubuntu Trusty
14.04, and that fix hasn't been applied to LM yet.

To fix this in Linux Mint 16 and Ubuntu 13.10, one needs to add the
'acpi_backlight=vendor' to the 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=' in the
'/etc/default/grub' file, running 'sudo update-grub', and then restart
