Candidate Work-around:
For the case of disabling swap, I was able to eliminate the boot-time
error with the following actions:
Remove swap line from /etc/fstab
Remove swap line from /etc/crypttab
Remove /swapfile
apt purge cryptsetup
apt autoremove (clean up cryptsetup dependencies)

This is a critical bug. It led to a path requiring a clean install of
Ubuntu and a restore of user data from backups. The upgrade was
ultimately unrecoverable even when booting to a Live USB stick to

for a window" setting takes two options: "In the menu bar" or "In the
window's title bar." Wolfram Mathematica, GNU Emacs, Java applications,
and possibly others display menus under the window's title bar in the
traditional way.

As noted by @loyeyoung, a better work-around than the one in Comment #2
may be to disable swap rather than running with an encrypted home
directory and unencrypted swap as that state is a security liability.
For the case where hibernate depends on swap, hibernate would also need
to be disabled.

user experience in Unity. Since this is a systematic issue affecting all
applications run as a different user than the desktop user, it seems
