It was just a screen brightness issue after all, possibly a duplicate of

The 12.10 live CD and the fresh install both start also the X-windows,
but the screen is just dimmed to black. FN+right arro
The apport information is now provided after succesful Ubuntu
installation using HDMI port. I retried installation with Ubuntu 12.10
CD without any command options, but having a TV set connected to HDMI
port. Acer's own screen went black and remained as such, but by means of
FN+F5 keys I got the gr

The compatibility issue with Windows XP (my comment 2008-05-30) seems to
be related to DVD authoring, not to burning. I use dvdauthor and
growisofs to burn DVDs and they seem to produce Windows XP incompatible
DVDs since upgrade to Hardy. I tried making an ISO image using mkisofs
and then burned it
