Portrait display can't be positioned to the left of lands

I have two displays, one (DP-2) set up in portrait mode to the left, and
one (DP-1) set up landscape to the right. When I try to reflect this in
mate-display-properties I can't drag DP-2 to match with the left edge of
the right-hand one (see screenshot 1).
It looks suspicious

seems to work in xubuntu 14.04 LTS, too.

I tested the 9.10 (Karmic) Release Candidate as a Live CD on my ThinkPad
T42 (which was running Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems).
The desktop startup noise plays, and the panels appear with no icons.
The desktop background has not loaded. At this point the display
freezes, including the mouse pointer

visualisation and analysis package commonly used by scientists and
engineers. It seems extremely sensible to add a 2-line script to a
package in order to fix this, given the benefits in terms of backwards
compatibility and user exp
