Public bug reported:
If postgresql.conf does not contain a unix_socket_directories setting,
and the /var/run/postgresql directory does not exist, postgresql startup
will fail due to underlying postgresql utilties throwing a "Cannot stat
/var/run/postgresql" error.
The issue is easy to reproduce:

I've commented on a similar bug to this for the Thinkpad T43
(bug#519142), but it seems this is a more general problem.
After some more debugging I've also discovered that my throttling issue
is heat-related. For whatever reason, it seems my max cpu speed gets
locked at 800mhz when my CPU goes abo
Hello,
These scaling problems are plaguing me on my Thinkpad T43 as well. The
behaviour is very difficult to predict; sometimes it will scale fine on
AC and battery power after a fresh boot, then begin to have problems on
battery. Now it is failing to scale at all, even on AC power, on fresh
boot.
There is this link posted for what looks like the same issue:

This person also gets the problem on a Macbook pro, and, surprise, I
have a Macbook pro and am experiencing the same issue.

I have this same problem on my Thinkpad T43 running Lucid.
The problem happens intermittently for me, maybe once a day under normal
usage. Reloading the module fixes the issue.
The only interesting messages I can find in syslog are the following:

I have had nothing but troubles with this BCM4322 wireless n card in my

of dropped packets and overall poor performance (1-2mbps is my typical
throughput)

I'm getting the exact same errors on my Macbok Pro 5.4 with a fresh
installation of 9.10 beta 64-bit.
When I go to hardware drivers no options are provided for driver
activation (whether STA or B43) and the above error is given for the b43
module.
The solution for me was to download to a USB key
For anyone trying to get this to work with more recent Ubuntu versions,
I can confirm that setting the kernel option works for me on my Thinkpad
T43 on Ubuntu 9.04.
Setting the max_cstate=3 was sufficient, and I am noticing little
difference in power consumption (when idle with the lowest screen
