Finally set up Gnome in Lucid ( 10.4 LTS ) on the Averatec 3280.
It still has the improper log in display ( GDM ) with the wrong default
screen size ( 1600x1200 ). However, there is enough screen showing to
log in in the lower right side. Once inside as ROOT, I can force the
1024x768 for the defau
What has gotten really obnoxious in the latest revisions of Kbuntu is
that the HARDWARE MODIFICATIONS panel in the main menu is gone. I used
to be able to force the proper display driver and monitor ( yes, it gave
you a warning ) and reboot X/the system.

I fixed this problem in an earlier release. Sorry, I don't have notes on
how I did it. Silly me, I upgraded and lost the Linux side of a dual
boot Averatec 3280 system and I use the XPpro side until this bug is
fixed.

Here are the xorg files that have worked for me.
xorg.#1 is the INITIAL file that got me into the Averatec 3280; it is a
modified version of the generic xorg file.
xorg.#2 is the file that I am running now with no problems. It is the
output from the KDE 3 video hardware setup.

windows and you had to use the mouse to redraw then.
I have installed the via drivers in it's place. They appear to function

Intrepid is not stable enough on the Armada to check out the ESS
install. That was the subject of a different bug...
I was able to install a minimum 8.04 system using ubuntu server; I can
apt-get the rest; the Kubuntu live disk just blanks the screen in both
8.04 and intrepid.
The ESS sound fix
I can confirm that the intrepid release candidates ( as of the September
download ) have this problem with machines across the board. Memtest
2.01 fails on lower memory, to the point it crashes and locks up on a
Dell Latitude CPx and a home built Dual Core Athlon that are stable. (
under 8.04 & old

Oh yes, the built in sound ( ESS chip based system ) doesn't work at all. On
boot, the system generates clicks like it is initializing the system, but the
Linux kernel doesn't see it and starting any ALSA system doesn't see it
either.( loudspeaker with an red X icon ).

Just to drop you a line and say thanks and that the problem has been
resolved in Edgy. The fan now turns on and stays on. It keeps the system
nice & cool now.

Failure is repeatable. I tried the steps in the community support documents (
SoundTroubleshooting ) and I have run across a basic problem.
The kernel will not cross the bridge that the ess sound chip uses.

It looks like the problem has been resolved in the latest batch of
fixes. The fan now runs constantly and keeps things cool. I note in the
system log that their is now an entry specifically for the Armada 1700
series and MSFT that turns the fan on and it stays on.

The problem is that this is in the " gray area " between HW and SW. I
can fix the HW problem with a pair of wire cutters and a soldering
iron.Not an elegant fix but it works. The BIOS in the Armada is in
software AND hardware. I don't think HP wants to support an older Compaq
laptop either. I do ha

distros. This is an ongoing problem based on what I have seen in the
posts to various internet forums. All Debian based distros appear to
have this problem.

My bad on this one. This bug report ( infinite loop ) should close. I screwed
up and tried an upgrade on a 2GB hard drive.
Between bouncing off a full drive and getting hot, the system reacted in
this manner. Moral of the story: don't network upgrade Kubuntu on a 2GB
