I encountered this bug too (impossibility to change values of dconf using both
dconf and gsettings). It emerged after an update of:
gnome-desktop3-data (3.5.4-0ubuntu2) to 3.5.90-0ubuntu1,
gsettings-desktop-schemas (3.5.2-0ubuntu1) to 3.5.90-0ubuntu2,
libglib2.0-0 (2.33.6-1) to 2.33.10-0ubuntu3,

There seems to be an error in maverick repositories. The package
libjpeg8-dev does not provide its virtual package libjpeg-dev. The other
version, marked obsolete, does provide this dependency, but is in
conflict with this newer package. Because

server with whichever tool I like and everything works, except for that
