box) and I just get gdm3 crashing I have installed sddm (and lightdm and
one other) and neither gnome shell with Wayland nor X11 will work all

You are using an old version of gcc (11.4) and that is causing the
errors. The default version of gcc in Ubuntu 24.04 is 13.3
Either remove the old version(s) of gcc if you don't need them, or
change the default version of gcc.
