I have a similar problem... I try to update from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10.

Thanks from me too.
Spot-on advice for my muted Olidata laptop, under Ubuntu 11.10.
Fresh install today, no prior.
Started installing 11.04 which then immediately upgraded itself.
Audio device is an ATI IXP AC97.
I'll make a note about the alsamixer for future reference :)
