I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 and I also have this problem.
I also have the grub problem where I turn the machine on from cold and the
screen goes blank, if I turn the power off again (via the switch) and back on

Tried both (in order; uninstalled alsa-driver-modules with Synaptic,
then clicked on the .deb URL to install); still nothing.
Yes, this is a Dell desktop; problem is with both line-out and
headphones. My sound was fine until the upgrade; hadn't changed a thing
in my cables/jacks/connections.
Well it seems it was a problem with gstreamer. Deleting the ".gstreamer"
directory in my home folder seems to have fixed the problem. I guess
this "bug" can be considered invalid/closed.

I was talking with Neil earlier today and told him I would investigate
this on my dual monitor desktop. Prior to this windows weren't
maximizing correctly and things that should have worked (like synergy)
stopped. We suspected that the port to compiz would inherit it's better
multimonitor support.
