The etckeeper post-install command that fails is run at the very end of
the apt run (here, at the very end of the update) so that should not
leave things in a broken state. It just fails to commit the /etc changes
in the etckeeper bzr repository. As the previous commenter said, doing

Maybe you need to recompile and modprobe nvidia.ko. Also, try the
nomodeset kernel option, since nouveau might claim your graphics card

I experienced the same bug on 9.04
I tried moving the data from a 1TB (sdc) disk to a 1.5TB (sdh) disk and at 40%
the machine had a kernel panic: out of memory
After the reboot I started pvmove -i 60 -v

I Agree with antistress: This bug is not the one that is linked to from
upstream: the bug reported there is that when middle-click dragging
files in a folder with no write permissions, copy, move, and create link
are not grayed out, as they should be and as they are when just right-
