To be certain - if you shut down X entirely (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop)
can you recreate the issue? If so, then it definitely rules out an X
driver issue. If you can't reproduce it, then X may still be involved

I think I found a fix!
I took the file /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/jockey/oslib.py from my
other installation (hardy-upgraded Gutsy) and replaced the one on my
64-bit hardy, restarted jockey and installed ok.
Only problem was that when I logged in the taskbar icon reported a
jockey error. D

mines, although on my notebook, the desktop effects are laggy.

If you really want the desktop effects, one alternative is to use EnvyNG to
install the latest Nvidia drivers for you. It worked for me, although I

FYI: The same exact problem happens when trying to enable restricted
drivers with ATI (fglrx). I didn't the oslib.py mentioned above, but
looking at another users suggestion, I used synaptic to install the
latest fglrx driver and THEN used jockey-gtk to "enable" it... which
worked.

Hi again.
I'm very lucky because I can use Ubuntu 8.04 Beta everyday as my working PC.
One of the best parts is that it's connected to several Domains in a Windows
network. Is pleasant to see that browsing the Network now shows the Domains
and PC on it easier than Gutsy (IMO)
Install the extended preferences plugin and check the box that says
allow me to make the thing narrower than normal. Piece of cake and the
plugin is even in the repositories.

I'm using 8.04 now.Kubuntu. It hangs upon log out. Black screen.
Have not had a chance to try some of the work arounds suggested above.

Hi everyone.
Still working almost every day with this beauty of Ubuntu 8.04.
Yesterday I found the following:
Before posting this note, I was checking Bug #179400 but still doubt if it
applies or not.
As usual, I keep my Beta Hardy full patched.
In my case, I'm very happy
On the crashing note, often when I have things looping, newly launched
apps will crash out. Firefox (latest beta) and Tomboy are two key
examples of this. When I can next safely restart X, I'll force a
modifier key lock-up. I think that's what causes most crashes.

I've installed xubuntu 8.04 beta (x86_64). Installed some extra
libraries (GTK developing libraries, ia32) and flashplugin-nonfree.
After doing that, suddenly, when i opened firefox, it took about 2 o 3
minutes between i ran it from the terminal and the browser appeared.

I'm experiencing the same problem with hardy 8.04 beta, using acer
AL1916W and Nvidia 8500 GT running the proprietary nvidia driver. Any
news on a fix?
