Hello, I don't want to start new bug but I've found similar problem on HP Pavilion notebook (dv2025nr, dv2000 series). After update (it might happened this week) brightness adjusting stopped working, I can't change it via FN+F7/F8 and applet. However, it can be adjusted via procfs, using file /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness (echo 60 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness as root).
