That's because compiz needs 3D support which your card lacks, and since
it's using vesa that's not going to happen. In hardy you can use the
proprietary fglrx which should work with compiz.

manager becomes unresponsive when I unplug the device and plug it back

I see a very similar problem (unable to connect to networks using WEP,
along with that error), but only with the newer network-manager package.
The older one works fine.

Frequent unexplained drops from connectivity may also be related to ACPI
and APM functions.
Disabling ACPI or APM seems to allow some users to remain connected.
This may be an issue related to this reported bug.

Needs this patch applied, because rhythmbox loads the HAL values after
they scanned the entire PSP memory stick, which is too late. Without
this fix, rhythmbox might crash.

My system hangs approximately 10min - 1hr after starting to play audio.
I'm using Totem to play the audio. File format is mp3. Sound device is
C-Media CMI8738 through ALSA. Distribution is up-to-date Hardy Heron.

I'm seeing this too, on gutsy with a prism54 card and 2.6.23.8 or 2.6.24-rc3
kernel. (Ubuntu's 2.6.22 kernel doesn't boot on this machine.)
The only solution I found was to rm /etc/udev/75-persistent-net-generator.rules
then fix 70-persistent-net.rules by hand to force it to eth1 or eth0.
