When I get hit by that bug, I generally can't type anything because the keyboard focus isn't on any window. However, typing Alt-F2 (or whatever brings up the run dialog) actually works. From there, I can start a terminal that will actually get the focus. This is of course of limited use because the mouse events still don't work and I have no way to change the focus.
