Well, I fixed my problem. As I time went on, I continued to see more
programs segfaulting. When wine segfaulted it gave me a nice backtrace
which led me to believe the problem was in libc6. I used apt-get to
reinstall libc6 and now everything works fine.

My machine is slowed down massively by hard disk reads/writes. On
another machine I have been able to remedy this problem somewhat by
running a script calling hdparm at boot, but on my machine all the disks
are reported as scsi disks, which means I need to use sdparm.

I'm also facing this issue. I've just installed Ubuntu 7.10 rc on my
Sony laptop and now have a completely blank screen during boot, until
the gdm login screen appears. The screen is also completely blank
during shutdown until the computer powers off. Everything else seems to

I notice if I try to use the format - column feature it also crashes. I
started soffice from the command line and opened the help again. Here is the
output.. You can see it gets cut off..
