Yeah, this was an installer bug. You need to boot, stopping at the grub
menu, edit the boot entry, and change root=/dev/sda1 to root=/hda1. Once
booted, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, find the line with kopt_2_6 and
removed it, then run "sudo update-grub".

Figured this out.
It's because gdm flips back to the VT from which it was started (VT 1),
shortly *after* usplash is started -- the VT switch killing usplash.
Fixing bug #61529 so that usplash doesn't flip to VT 1 means that gdm is
started from VT 8 instead, which is where usplash is running when
I was also looking at the discussion on bug # 16873, which appears to be the
same problem, but they are looking at the radeon driver side rather than the
kernel, and they appear to have a patch that's looking promising, but it's edgy

1. About XIM and GTK/QT immodules
GTK/QT immodules are better then XIM in many aspects. However, scim's GTK/QT
immodules have ABI discompatibility issue, which is due to the C++. Other IM
servers written in C have no this problem.
Scim have its C-rewrit
It's actually a side-effect of a couple of other bug fixes.

Since kernel 2.6.17-7, the boot parameter in /boot/grub/menu.lst is set
to /dev/sda1. Of four machines that are running latest Edgy, only one
will boot (it is SATA).
On the remaining machines, I have the manually change /dev/sda1 to
/dev/hda1 to get the machines to boot.

Hi again -- well I now find I CAN connect to the internet -- I was still
getting the message I detailed on the 4th, but when I tried ping it worked, and
going into Firefox and looking up a site it Just Worked. The only thing I did
was
sudo ifup eth0
so maybe that was the key to it.
