I have had this problem with my Averatec 3715-EH1 Laptop. Using both
Ubuntu 5.10 and only recently in 6.06 (LTS). I don't use hibernate or
suspend (largely because if this bug) and seldom 'reboot.' It is usually
just a shutdown/restart. My initial 5.10 install was dual-boot with

I see this too. I don't think cryptsetup is related. If I boot up
without usplash, run /sbin/usplash manually, then switch to another text
virtual console, it is completely black. From that point on, all the
text VCs are black until I reboot.

Somehow, my Windows partition ended up being mounted in the wrong place
with the wrong permissions. Presumely this is used for detecting the
type of the partition:
$ mount | tail -1
/dev/sda1 on /tmp/disks-conf-sda1 type ntfs (rw)
this was correctable by:
$ sudo umou
This bug is pretty old. Is it still a problem?

You didn't have either x-window-system-core (which ubuntu-desktop
depends on) or ubuntu-desktop itself installed. The move to an "xorg"
package happened in edgy, so if you didn't have the correct metapackage
installed, you might very well end up with missing pieces. Also, note
that apt-get -f ins
its not in /var/crash/ ???

please re-mark all the packages for download/install. you cant install
packages that have not been fully downloaded first. try that see if it
fixes it.
