So, yesterday was not a good NT day for me. First off, the server that I
develop on at work had Service Pack #2 installed on it Thursday. Friday
morning and IIS and SQL Server stopped working. The machine can browse
the web and that is about it. Can not see other machines in the network

I like doing a stripped down Debian install (no packages selected in the
installer) and then just apt-getting what I need. I think a basic Deb
install takes 30-50 megs.

If the second box running SP2 was hacked, check your permissions. Sounds
like you have a configuration problem somewhere.
We run OpenBSD as our firewall, and have for a while. It's easy to setup
and use and works very well. The syntax for configuring it is very easy.
Our OpenBSD system also ha

Thanks for the thoughts. I used to use BSDI at an ISP I worked for and
they now run FreeBSD. The box will not serve any other purpose, so I do
not need X. This box will simply have a modem hanging off it to share the
connection.
I was able to use the Mandrake internet connection sharing wizard

I checked all the permissions on all files. I rescanned the event logs
and it appears that the asp.dll file is corrupt. Still c
Check out http://www.bastille-linux.org/ for securing Red Hat and Mandrake.
Very good script that explains everything it does and lets you learn.

As most of you know, Avril, Val and I are likely to be taking over
Linuxchix from Deb, who's suffering a case of burnout.
(Thank you, Deb, for administering Linuxchix to this point, and for
having the idea in the first place!)
I'm looking for list administrators, at this stage. The lists that

I read someplace that IIS 5 (if I remember the version
correctly) has a bug that will let a cracker execute
anything on your Win2k server. They have a patch for
it which you can download from Microsquish.
Good luck with the ICS - I've got Caldera 2.4 as my
server (eDesktop with IPchains) - and

Well, I think this used to be the case. I remember having problems with
RAID on older (6.0 maybe?) RHL installs because of this problem. Bear in
mind, your fstab file USED to read something like
/var/dev/hda5
So if hda or hdb switch around, that fstab won't work. However,

Hey all-
I'm getting these messages in my logs from ssh:
sshd[2325]: channel 2: rcvd big packet 2940, maxpack 2048
There are lots of them. the big packet numbers change, as does the channel.
What does this mean? I can't seem to find any reference to it on the
'net...
Thanks,

What are they, how are they being done and how
can I prevent/block them?

Best Buy has Mandrake 8.0 on the shelf! $65.00 for the 7cd power pack.
Here is my experience with it so far:

probably have been a good thing if they mentioned that
