*nod* I've used winamp and some other player that I've since forgotten the

Good thought only... if winamp runs on a friend's celeron, why won't it run
on my laptop's celeron? Is there anything potentially different?
I've tried all the usual buffer tricks in both operating systems, but

Let me rephrase this. the Covingtons suck a lot. Mendocino with
on-chip cache suck a little.

Why do you say Celerons suck? In side by side comparisons, the end user can
only tell a difference between Celeron and Pentium II/III machines in FPU
intensive applications. And even then, the difference is not extreme. MP3
decoding is more dependent on the decoder you use than it is in your
Hi Terri,
I don't know what is special about windows media player, but you could try
tweaking the preferences of winamp for higher priority. Likewise when I
start xmms under linux on a slow machine a script renices it to -10 so it
won't skip. Also I found xmms runs much better using the OSS drive

This isn't, strictly speaking, a linux problem, since it occurs in both
win98 and linux (rh 6.1).
My computer is a laptop (a Eurocom 3100c, specifically, with a mobile
celeron under the hood) using a maestro sound card. It plays CDs
beautifully and seems to have no problem with wav files or anyt
