Hi,
For really cheap Tier 3 SAN storage we have used a UK supplier of systems built
on Open-E http://www.open-e.com/partners/certified-systems/
For Tier 2 we have used Nexsan http://www.nexsan.com/ SATABoys, SATABeasts and
E-Series and found their systems and support to be excellent

Since you seem to have specific experience, can you share any more details on
why you don't recommend it?

I'm always interested in learning from your experiences and this is a bit of a

isilon is NAS, they don't (currently as I understand it) have SAN
options. But for NAS, it certainly does look really really nice.

Is this NFS storage, or do you export LUNs to your servers? What are

This is a key question. The short answer is "I don't know". We have many over
engineered systems here. I know we don't need the Ferrari type systems that we
currently have. Not sure what "good enough" looks like though.
We have Dell Compellent (we had them before Dell) in house as well as
Isilon.
The Compellent hardware is more like a standard two-controller system
(though they do virtual ports so it's a slight step up from
active/passive). It's comparable to the EMC Clariion type of array in that
sense, but the

Hi Edward,
I know the Cisco VPN Client that we use (and its successor, Cisco
AnyConnect) can be installed in a mode that launches the VPN client
before the Windows login screen comes up. (The user can decline the VPN
connection if desired.) This "VPN-before-login" functionality would

We were looking at EMC's Isilon over the Summer. It seemed to be a good

features. We are pretty heavily invested in netapp though and trying to
not sprawl. Negotiations continue...

Craig,
I use equallogix and like it, but it can be expensive. You may want to
look at Silicon Mechanics ZFS based storage at:

as it would be cheaper and may meet your needs. If you really want to

I've heard good things about Dell's Compellent and Equallogic lines. I
think the real crux of the matter is how fast you need it to be.
