It is easy to create e.g. PNG from SVG and release eventual modules in
png format.
The point I tried to make was regarding _creating_ maps.

Remember, also, at least according to the Free Software Foundation,
that the authors of a program are not able to copyright, patent or
license the data which a user produces with a program. E.G. SWORD
cannot force a particular license on the content of Personal
commentary modules, Microsoft can't
One thing to keep in mind about maps and copyright is that as with all
copyrights facts are not what is copyrighted. The location of towns,
rivers, roads and other factual features of geography are not
copyrightable. It is other things about a map, such as the legend, that
are protected by copy
Not Bible maps per se, but has anyone used http://www.openstreetmap.org/

The maps at http://bibleatlas.org/ were also produced using this software.
Although the bibleatlas maps are copyrighted material, they are a good

I have in the mantime written to the author and he expressly does not
claim any copyright on the produce, even if built on the data he provides.
There was also somehwere a wiki I think with examples and again it is
stated there that teh results are PD as far as he is concerned.

Thank you Peter.
I have been searching for a good source of biblical maps and found this
software that can quickly create customized maps:
http://www.biblemapper.com/
The software has a very nice looking map template on top of which you can
show or hide biblical cities, rivers, peaks, boundaries,

In general it is better to point at the repository than to create your
own derrived distribution.

Ok, I've thought some more about maps and this is what I've come up with.
Three basic types,
1)Static- These would just be images support for this is already basically
done.
2)Interactive- These would be the hallmark. It would possibly be derived from
SVG or some other similar standard. Basic

Hi
Just an update.
The 3D terrain software I had was too limited. I am currently testing 3
other packages. This will take some time as I need to learn the interfaces.
The packages I'll be testing are
3DEM
Blue Marble
Open Scene Graph
So please be patient.

Both PostScript and PDF are standards developed by Adobe which we are free to use.

I see the discussion has shifted to using an
external map program - which is fine. However,
internal image support would be nice for books that
have pictures (not related to maps).
Unfortunately I am not a programmer, or I would
offer to help with some code. :)

Keeping me (relatively) spam free since 2002
Troy added an image support protocol to the library in 1.5.3, but at the
moment their are neither modules nor frontends that use it. So it's in
the plan to be handled soon. No plans for multimedia, but we could
think about handling them in a similar fashion.

One of the good features of web browsers is that they can use helpers to
accomodate other applications. Does anyone know if we are heading in that
direction to support graphics and/or multimedia?
