errors are gone, user_prefs are now being created. I also switched to sockets.
run script now reads,

PATH

I suspected at first that I had a .qmail- file calling spamc without
the $DELIVER arg, hence no user value. I checked and every .qmail-
file has a valid entry in vpasswd. They do, I have no orphaned .qmail
files.
