looks good, but I cannot find whether or not it is supported by sane. Other
PIXMA MG 5XXX seem to be supported, but can someone give me a yes or no

How can I change this?
I've downloaded the sane with this git clone command:

I think you are not running the version you think you are. On my system:
scanimage -V
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.25git; backend version 1.0.25
