Building 1.0.18 from source solves the problem. Apparently the rpm I was
using has an issue. Thank you Wolfram and ev
nstalled. Wolfram is
suspecting a broken rpm, and I think I'll grab the latest stable
source and build it myself.

tand this at all.
I'm running out of ideas. If the problem is with my installation, and
yet a clean reinstallation does not fix the issue, then what else
should I be looking at to find my problem?
With my continued thanks,

a regular "scanimage" command sent to you by private email. If you are
still interested let me know.
I have tried using two different USB cables, both known good.
Ideas, anyone?

You will notice from the above that both sane-find-scanner and scanimage
-L detect it as FlatbedScanner 22, not the correct FlatbedScanner 24.
You are thus probably wondering if I am uploading the firmware
correctly, so here's the relevant fragment from my
/usr/local/etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf:
---snip---
# Change to the fully qualified filename of your firmware file, if
# firmware upload is needed by the scanner
firmware
/home/warren/mydocs/doc/hardware/scan/benq_5300u/firmware/u254v042.bin
# If not automatically found you may manually specify a device name.
# For USB scanners also specify bus=usb, e.g.
# /dev/usb/scanner0 bus=usb
# For SCSI scanners specify the generic device, e.g. /dev/sg0 on Linux.
# /dev/sg0
---snip---

e that it downloaded correctly.
Note that my scanner is a 5300U, and the sane-snapscan page only
mentions 5300 (without the "U". I have been assuming that this is not
significant, given that the USB IDs are the same.

rmware upload
problems have been reported with my scanner, but if I am reading the log
above correctly this does not appear to be a problem here.
Any ideas as to what I should be looking at to get this scanner working?
TIA,
