typing in status at the prompt tells me that the lpd daemon is not present.

It might be your modem, I had trouble and blamed it
on mgetty only to discover that if my computer is up
and running for a few days with mgetty the modem
quits working. Same computer loses the cd if it is
up too long. I suspect it might be getting to hot.

There are other solutions out there I'm sure. The easiest is with a hub
even for a "peer" network for file and print sharing. Only one hub
should be needed for a network of three or four computers.

a D-Link minihub. They r
