I'm trying to build this source rpm on my RHL 4.2 system as part of my
upgrade-by-stealth program. Unfortunately, it dies thus:
gcc -static -O2 -m486 -fno-strength-reduce -o insmod.static insmod.o
logger.o ../obj/libobj.a ../util/libutil.a
ld: cannot open -lc: No such file or directory

i know that on our SCO boxes the samba that we have writes to a
smbprint.log in /tmp, but as far as i can see there isnt such a thing on
linux. the version of samba on these SCO boxes if rather old, so i dont
know if that has anything to do with it or not.

I'd be quite happy with the old way. This might be a better solution:
alias rpm='nice -n 1 rpm'
Even better, for rpm to do it internally.
