To all techies, what if a bleeder resister, similar to what is used on a
capacitor, was in parallel with the PV strings or array? That should pull down
any high voltage from a low illuminance light source.

Hello the answer is yes. On a job several years ago to finish I worked
after dark. It was a full moon, and a street light was nearby I got bit
from a 500 Voc module string. I am sure I did not have 500 V but it only
takes 20 ma. To be deadly. I did not get my volt ohm meter out but I should

Here is one paper from San Francisco.

However, firefighters have particular safeguards they should follow day

I believe that kind of illumination could certainly put out some voltage
but wouldn't have much, if any, current or power behind it. But could
shock someone.
Any dangerous energy would have to come from a capacitor being charged
up that SHOULD be disconnected

They can generate enough illumination to have the module(s) reach ~ Voc.

Hi wrenches,
In speaking to local firefighters last year, I had a question that stumped
me. At night, will the light from the flames or the fire fighters' flood
lights energize the array to a dangerous potential?
Any light you can shed (pun intended) would be most welcome.

Hi Dan,
I'll try to stop short of playing armchair firefighter here, and stick to what
legitimate data is available. I follow most of the prominent Firefighter trade
rags, and while there is some good technical content, there are also a fair
amount of opinion pieces.
The UL study linked earlie

Hi Dave,
These are some great questions you're asking, and you've prompted some
interesting responses. I've been partnered up with a career firefighter for the
past 2yrs teaching this subject, and have a few thoughts for you:
Review the NFPA's recommended best practices for interactions with PV
I suggest you review the testing UL did regarding firefighting and PV,
specifically their tests involving the use of foam, before jumping on that
bandwagon...
