Luke, I have used a number of coatings over the years. My go to coating is made by 3M, I believe its called Heavy Duty Performance coating. 3M rates it resistant to Sulphuric acid at something like a 15% solution, but I have seen some boxes I made in the early 90s that were pig-sties and the coa

[RE-wrenches] Inverter Failure Due to Generator Backfeed (?)

2016-01-29 Thread Jason Szumlanski
I'm looking at two Eaton PV250 inverters that failed simultaneously as far as we know (not my install). Everything checked out normal, but no display and no power output. I suspect both boards are bad. Upon digging into the scenario I discovered that the owner had a whole-house generator transfer s

Wrenches We have been installing combiners with anything more then 1 string on the TL inverters. Troubleshooting is better with a remote combiner, its seems a waist but all our inspectors to like to see it also. On Jan 29, 2016 10:36 AM, "Mark Byington" wrote: > > > "Transformerless inverters nee

[RE-wrenches] DC Fuses on TL Inverters

2016-01-29 Thread Mark Byington
"Transformerless inverters need fuses on both DC positive and DC negative legs to protect the inverter in case of ground fault." I could be wrong, but my understanding is that TL inverters are no different than transformer type inverters in terms of DC fusing requirements - no fuse required

Dan, I concur with your basic assessment. After listening to an Aquion presentation, and reviewing the operating curves, this battery has a very narrow application. Most off-grid houses these days have significant surge loads. That is why we spend so much time and effort making sure our

That new chart is for a single block, but we would want the M100 or M110 which is 12 of those S30 blocks connected together (580 AH @ 20 hr rate). I haven't tried them, but I penciled out the ROI and at 3000 cycles they stand up well against other lead acid batteries. 40 v is low, but I believ

Thanks Dana. The new curves don’t look much better. Look at the space between the curves and realize that they are only 2A load difference. If we extrapolate to 17 amps the capacity will be greatly reduced. They need to show what the voltage sag is under full 680 Watt load. Has anyone actually

Ray, I have had good success with flat rubber membrane roofing. I have not had good success with caulked seams, so i run a continuous peice and lap the corners. A stapler won't hold the laps so i will drive a wood screw into the box corner to hold it tight. It has never gotten gooey on me even

I second Larry's concerns about Aquion's SOC/voltage curves and tripping LVD at only 40% DOD with standard PV equipment, tied in with not being able to handle high discharge C-rates and surge loads. I did some math on running a typical off-grid home with a well pump on Aquions, and it wasn't pretty

Hi Shasta; Sounds like you get the prize for battery box diligence. Lots of good ideas there, although I've seen very bad things happen with steel bottom trays for batteries. I've also seen spray on bed liner get peeled right off by acid, so I would go with all plastic or concrete on any insid
