I think many manufacturers use Refurb parts for repair/ warranty. I had
a cell phone replaced under warranty and the "new" one was not new at all.

I agree with Tom here about 2 strings.
And I have been told more than a few times in the last 22 years, from battery
folks that there is no substitute for lead, in terms of capacity or longevity.
Here is a comparison I worked up for a job just the other day and I’ll let you
figure out which
HI Larry,
As far as I know, OB only sells refurbished boards ( for out of warranty
stuff), which come with a short warranty
You can contact Tom Duffy, he sells new OB boards with come with full warranty.
Its a running joke between Daniel and myself.

How much was it, l dont think Outback is not required new parts for OOW
repairs. l have always had to return the replaced part. Im sure it has been
tested as if it was new, right?

We've gotten Rolls clunkers right from the factory with zero volts, and

This is normal and don't expect it to work for long. I have had board
replacement fail out of the box and many others within months of
replacement. We as a company have left outback unless we have to use them

I received a replacement FET board from Outback that I ordered for an out of

expecting a new part. Is this normal for Outback?

We have been using L16's made by East Penn / Deka for many years, 100's of them
installed every year, and have yet to have a cell failure attributed to
manufacturing. Sure there has been occasional melted terminals or dry battery
due to customer neglect.
What I most like about this brand is the
I have used the nickel iron and have hsd great results. If your customer is
looking long term it might be an option. They do work better for 48 then 12
due to voltages of the batteries

Ditto here too.
98% of my clients use the HUP and its bomber I have a client that is over
20+ years at this point. With regular EQ as required by SG readings, Battery
bar maintenance, watering, & testing they just keep going. I have a 14 year

Dan,
That problem of no AC at remote sites while waiting for replacement
batteries is why I always recommend at least two strings paralleled
through a buss bar rather than across terminals. That way if one
battery or cell fails in one series string you can very easily remove

Hi Chris:
I have used the Schetter FS ground mount system on about 15 residential
jobs and its great. Easy to install, strong simple design and it looks very
good. It is faster and cheaper if you buy a kit for 12 solar modules and
size your system in multiples of 12. If you don't do that, they co
While I also advocate single strings and minimizing parallel strings when
off the grid, single strings have one big problem, especially in more
remote areas and especially with 6 volt batteries - 1-4 weeks downtime of

Hello Wrenches,
Even after my clients have learned to maintain their batteries
properly, the Trojan L-16 batteries continue to crater, one cell at a
time. One client is considering spending $12,000 on a nickel - iron
battery bank he found on the web. This seems like a ridiculously

Schletter FS is a good system which we have used often on small and large
ground mounts. Unfortunately, they have gone through a lot of turmoil over
the previous year, with staffing turnover and some major production, design
and customer service problems. Not sure if they've gotten back on track
Has anyone had success using Schletter FS racking system? I am having a
hard time talking to their people, and getting answers to some
information to price the project.
Thank you, Chris

While I have no experience with HUP, I do have many years of experience
with Rolls/Surrette. They are a robust battery, and in my opinion superior
to Trojan and other mid-line flavors. I am not as adamant about staying
away from L16s as Allan, although I'd whole-heartedly agree with keeping to

Drake,
Your request is missing specifics so my answer can only be generic.
Get away from all L16s. Go to one string of industrial cells. There
are numerous well-respected brands. I would put HUPs at about the
top. www.hupsolarone.com. Spend some time on this website and i
Hi Allan
Backwoods has 190 watt 72 cell for good pricing.
They are roughly the same physical size as the 165's they have.
