Actually with the Dia Compe center pulls, I do have the reach, though
maxed out on that. And I've got the reach with my Tektro canti brakes
on the SJ.

I'm currently using some of the "city levers" from Velo Orange. They
have a nicer look than the black-and-silver Tektros.

i ran the abars upside down, as suggested by some on this forum, and
thought they were awesome. what i really liked was how much more
comfortable it was gripping the curves with the bars sloping outward
down. what i didn't like was how much the barends hit my knees with
the bar that much lower.
