Your diagonal cutter method is accurate.
I confess that even I used Diagonal cutters for brake housing when I was a
shop mechanic, but I did that only for tool preservation reasons. I'd us
definitely not on the cables, but good cable cutters that size are
inexpensive - $12. (though you could put on a knarp first then cut cable
with a dremel).

I second what Tim says. Bicycle housing cutters are for longitudinal
housing only. I found when I tried a dremel cutoff tool on brake wires, it
left a sharp edge on the inside of the spiral wrap as well as ground up
abrasive, metal and burned plastic in the hole. Not good for preventing

Agree! Good cable cutters are one of the things you absolutely should buy
new. The Park ones at $35 - $40 are a great value. That's what's on my
bench at home. At the shop I always ran Felco. Those are twice as
expensive but last forever even at the shop.

I bought the Hozan cable cutters, which work just fine. You can get them on
Amazon for forty dollars. For brake housing I mostly use a Dremel with a
cut off wheel. Much cleaner cut.

I figured "how many cuts do I make?" Why don't I just get a used one for
half price? This is the question I ponder on everything bike related (and
most of my bike related things are bought used for half price).
I brought this same thing up on this list or iBob a year or so ago and got

Yikes, i don't remember paying this much for my shimano cutter! but then
i'm pushing 15 years on mine.
I can see where doug is coming from, even if i did all my bikes once a
year, that's only around 30 cuts per year. even over 15 years that's
expensive per cut. but it is nice knowing i ha

I just did search for the park tool and this came up. Can't vouch for it
personally but the price is right.

The park tool has cable and cable housing ferrule crimpers on the inside of the
cutting jaws. You can use the housing ferrule crimper to round out the cable
housing after cutting it. It works quite well his way. Just squeeze hard enough
until the housing is rounded. Additional finishing, if need

I got the Perdros one. Works great for me. Very sharp and a bit less $$$
than the Parks. No crimper, but a regular pliers works fine for that.
