I use the 6700RD with a 9x2 speed , closely spaced, HG cassette, the Connex 908 chain, and Silver DT shifters on my Ram. This may be the best shifting I have ever had, including SIS. it's not obvious to me that 10 speed offers recreational riders enough advantage to justify the added cost and

I like the look of the Ultegra and like the Alfine single ring with chainguard even more. Have one on my Surly Cross Check. The lines just seem to flow in a way I like. And the Q factor falls into the range I happen to prefer. Guess having fat thighs can have an advantage. Eric Platt St. P

So last night I took the drivetrain off the Sam Hillborne and replaced it with the Ultegra stuff. 6700 RD, Crankset, BB and an older Campy FD because the Ultegra is for braze on and I don't currently have a clamp for it. It seems to be working fine with the 7 speed freewheel; I will do a test

I may be wrong, but I think I read somewhere you can use the narrower chain on the wider cassettes, but not the other way around, So if that's the case even if they change the space for the chain on the deraillers one should still be able to backwards apply the technology. On Tue, Apr 10, 2012 a

A 10 sp chain will work with any ~3/32 cogset, from 5 to 10. It's when using "lower number" chains with "higher number" cogsets that you sometimes (not always -- I've found that 9 sp chains work fine on some 10 sp cassettes) have problems. Odd: the Surley Dingle 2-speed fixed cog needs at least a

this was actually going to be my next question. Do you think I should just use the 8 speed chain that I have already (take a link out or two) or go with the 10 speed? Will a ten speed chain work with a 7 speed freewheel? I do love the fact that with friction shifting it makes it so much eas

Yeah, it's pretty ugly. Frankly, all the recent Shimano cranks are ugly as sin. I will probably just stick with the Sugino. Thanks for the suggestions from everybody, seems like it may be a good idea to change the chain to a 10 speed too (which I have on hand anyway). On Tuesday, April 10,

As long as you can thread some 8-speed chain through the rear derailer pulleys without scraping the sides of the cage, I don't see a problem using it. I don't recommend changing the front, though. My experience with 9-speed derailers and 8-speed chains is that a lot of trimming is involved beca
