As long as you can thread some 8-speed chain through the rear derailer pulleys without scraping the sides of the cage, I don't see a problem using it. I don't recommend changing the front, though. My experience with 9-speed derailers and 8-speed chains is that a lot of trimming is involved because of the narrow front cage. Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA.
