If this was a sudden sort of event, then check the rear wheel and make sue it
hasn't shifted in the dropouts. If it's in even slightly cock-eyed, it might
cause this problem. I had this happen once when I didn't tighten my skewer
quite enough.

I would disconnect the cable from the derailleur and then reconnect
and readjust. I've had similar problems in the past, and it turned
out that the derailleur wasn't adjusted properly. Loosen the cable
clamp on the derailleur, make sure the adjuster barrel is about midway
out, check that

My guess is either the barcon for the rear is loose and so in effect
shifting on it's own, or the cable is not taut enough. For the first, try
tightening the screw that holds the lever - its pivot point. For the
second, turn the adjusting barrel out (counter-clockwise as you look down
the
