I used Shimano MO76 MTB shoes and M324 SPD/platform pedals.

why not just get rid of the 20t freewheel and put on an 18t or a
16/18t duo on the flip side before the ride? you'll have your 22t for

FYI my gearing was 40/32 upfront with a 16/18 White industries
freewheel on one side and a 22t freewheel on the other side.
I used 40x16 90% of the time and changed down to 32x22 for the slog up
onto the North Yorkshire Moors.

FWIW, I will have a small tool bag in back and a Berthoud handlebar
bag in front. Probably 3lbs of gear plus my fat ass... I am carrying a
camera, phone, wallet, and any 'fall' gear that gets stripped off in
the afternoon. Probably not more than 3 lbs total.

One key aspect that has not been mentioned is the social aspect of the
ride.
Keep in mind that this is a non-competitive group ride with lots and
lots of friendly people. If you have any inkling to be social during
the ride, or participate in the small groups that naturally form, you
might miss
Now you have to do it.. you are already imaging the ride, the
conversations, the finish. If you use another bike now, you will spend
the whole ride wondering about/ wishing for the QB. You've destroyed
your chance of happiness on another bike.
But yeah, I think you have rocks in your head.

My two cents' worth would be that you're geared too low. I suggest
setting yourself up with around 70-72 gear inches. You can always go
to the small ring (or flip the hub) if you come to a prolonged climb.
I rode PBP (lots of rolling terrain) in 72", and thought later that I
could have used
I hope it's ok if I weigh in here, I just bought a Quickbeam and I'm
interested in this discussion.
In touring, I've found the low end to be the limitation and the
dividing line between pain and pleasure. So much depends on your
fitness, the terrain and the weight you will be carrying as well as

looking at the elevation charts/profile, the ride looks quite flat -
in fact, it seems like the whole ride has a general downward trend.
hang on to your hat on Day 1 -
Thoughts on gearing? I have a 20 and 22-tooth freewheel in back;
standard set-up in front.

Nah, no rocks. Local rider Ken Yokanovich raced the TransIowa on his
fixed Quickbeam (350 miles, 1/2 or more gravel). Load and gear right
for the terrain and you'll be fine.
do it. DO IT!! be smart about your gearing and you'll be fine.

If it's comfortable and you've got the gears and the motor, I'd think it to
be a fine idea. From a mechanical standpoint, there's not a whole lot to go
wrong with a setu
Cross state? How about cross country (California to Kansas) or across
France (PBP)? Fixed.
It *can* be done, if you're willing to work for it.
