Interesting—that design dates to the early days of cycling and certainly wasn’t
invented by Specialized. My Pashley Guvnor, built a few years ago per plans
drawn up by Pashley in the 1920s, has the same basic design:

Here is a pic of an 83 Stumpy like the one I had

As you can see it is very unique, I have not seen anyone configure the stays
like this again. What it self evident in the pic is the straight part is just

Thanks Garth... I have used Shimano 127's before, and they did work fine,
though I think I remember the shop that installed it on one bike needing to
use a spacer or two on the drive side (nothing wrong with that as far as I
know). Now living in a relatively small town, with far fewer resource
Bob, I have the AT crank left over from my ol' Stumpjumper daze. When the 124mm
Sugino original cup and cone bb eventually wore out I replaced it with a 127
Shimano UN-72 cartridge and it was a perfect fit for the Stumpie and it's

Agreed... Somehow I got started with Phil BB's on any really special bikes
I had and have never had a problem. That said, I do like what I read about
the SKF's but I have not seen one listed that would fit these AT cranks.
Why I ended up fixated on the most hard to fit crankset is a recurring
You are very welcome. I too was tempted to stick the 130 symmetrical on a
support and hit the left side of the spindle with a hammer, but I'm glad I
waited the 10 days or so required to get the thing back to Phil, adjusted,
and back to me.
FWIW, I've got 13100 miles on one Phil, almost 11K on anot
Patrick,
That is good advice and certainly good information. I know there are ways
I see mentioned about a DIY change in the offset but I am resisting that.
I would much rather have PW do it right. I have another crankset and BB I
can use in the meantime.
Alas, I only have the 130 symmetric
I expect it will work, but it looks as if you need an offset 130. Phil will
do that for you for a small fee, plus postage: IIRC, $10.
When I switched the Matthews to a Logic, I ordered a symmetrical 130 and
found myself in your situation, I sent it back for offsetting, and wala,
the problem, as In
Since I trust people here more than most, I decided I would ask instead oh
assuming or hoping...
I am installing a Sugino AT triple (50/38/26) on a Joe. I am using a
130mm Phil Wood bottom bracket that I happened to have in the stash,
knowing that something even more exotic (127.5/+5?) is cal
