I'm going to put a 22T small chaingring on my bike, and am wondering if it's
advisable to go with aluminum or stainless steel for a small chainring like
that. Specifically I'm looking at the "Rocket Cycles" brand chaingring.

David, sorry you had a bad ride. Changing flats in the rain sucks. I
had that happen a few weeks back. And multiple flats... Then again,
changing them in the heat with no shade is bad too. And when you're
fatigued...

That's true. I ride my Atlantis and Quickbeam, both with drop bars, on trails
and gravel/dirt roads quite often. The Atlantis wears 700x35, the 'Beam has

Hi René, what a great bike you have! My All-Rounder is basically an AHH w/

That said, it sounds like you like bikes a lot and are used to having
multiple bikes. I would hold off on selling the Roubaix for a while until

Hello,
I'm new to the list, but I've been following it daily for the past
couple of weeks and have to say I've learned a lot about Rivendell and
steel bikes in such a short time. I am new to the whole Rivendell
philosophy, but discovering it has saved my cycling. For the past 7
years, since movin

Nicely kitted out. I think you'll like it over the miles. The green paint is a
super shade. I can't get excited over the orange Hillbornes for some reason,
though the Rambouillet orange was great IMO

Today's ride wasn't as epic as PBP but it was fun. The weather held
while I pedaled out to the start in Forest Grove. The rain began about

fun! I just love cycling. I ran into a friend at the finish and got a

Hi. Thanks for the nice words about my collection. Yes, I do like
moustache bars since they allow me to ride more upright. I remember when I
first saw a picture of a bike outfitted with moustache bars - they intrigued
me. I did some research and found they were sold only on bikes manufactured

Excellent. The more I see the Sam Hillborne, the more I admire it.It's one of those great deals that you hope people take advantage of while it's available. Kind of like the 2003 Romulus. Or mid-to-late-80's Trek 400's. Or the 1991 MB-4.-Original Message-

Nicely done Dick. I must say you have one of the finest collections of
bicycles (at least the type I enjoy) that I have ever seen. I also
realize there is someone else out there that enjoys moustache bars as
much as I do. Out of curiosity why the 48 spoke wheels?

The original (green) QuickBeam was something of a departure for Rivendell.
It was not from Waterford or Toyo or a custom builder or their usual
sources. It came from Panasonic and it came at what most of us original
buyers considered to be a pretty good price, especially for a
Rivendell-badged com
Not to change the subject, but does anyone know if Rivendell is
planning to re-stock those Quickbeam-specific hubs from Suzue, maybe
for their new incarnation of the QB?* I (hopefully) should have some
QB wheels soon, but I was just wondering.

Maybe because the rear hub and chainring/chainguard arrangement are QB-
specific?
I wish I'd gotten a silver 56 when they were available.

I¹ve finally got my Sam Hillborne up and running to my liking. I started
off with moustache bars, then switched to Albatross bars which I like much
better. Here¹s a link to pictures for those interested:

Kucharki DOES make very nice stuff. I have two of their wool-blend
(they handle accidental dryings better!) jerseys and they are just
about the most comfortable things ever.
Gotta say, though, that I REALLY miss the old Wooly Warm line...
especially the tweed jersey.

They used to be offered as complete bikes,or frame only (I am from the
school that the fork IS the frame). I ordered my green as frame only.
I suppose their are just a few Qs available right now and they are
built up.

Just curious, does anyone know why you can't buy just the Quickbeam
frame and fork? All other models are available as a frame and fork,
but the Quickbeam is sold complete.
btw, is anyone looking to sell a 56 Quickbeam?

That's a nice write-up and build. Looks really cool. Almost
steampunk. The raw steel under the clear coat is the key, as I have
