David, sorry you had a bad ride. Changing flats in the rain sucks. I
had that happen a few weeks back. And multiple flats... Then again,
changing them in the heat with no shade is bad too. And when you're
fatigued...

If you're who I think you are, weren't you rolling a new pair of Ruffy
Tuffys on your bike? My experience with them is that they're pretty
sturdy tires. I think I've only ever had the one flat on them.

Don't give up on brevets. There'll be more next year. Like I told the
person I was riding with, I would have been more miserable if I hadn't
gone out for the ride than I was riding in the rain. He agreed.
