My latest choice are a set of Merrill hiking boots with wool socks. Heaviness varies with the cold. Have a couple pair of "heavy duty" wool work socks (aka railroad socks) that are decent. Otherwise it's often merino snowboarding or skiing socks. The boots were recommended at my local REI by an

I've used Hydrophane Darkening Oil on both my Brooks saddles and had great results. I've used it on our Saddleback Leather bags as well. It goes on easily and darkens with each application. It's completely clear and has no dyes. It's available online and at most tack supply shops. I've also used O

The saddle will certainly darken over time, and will darken somewhat with an application of Proofide. However if you treat the saddle with Obenaufs saddle treatment it will darken considerably more. Weather and use are factors too, but the treatments will alter it initially. My Bleriot saddle has

I've applied a few coats of Bullseye amber shellac over yellow Tressostar cloth tape but the look is considerably darker than my almost brand new honey Brooks b17. In fact, the bars more closely resemble the Brooks antique brown color. Will the shellacked bars fade? Will the seat darken? Or, in

I have to second that plastic shopping bags with thick wool socks over them work really well. I usually wear some sort shoe that does not allow much airflow for the outside layer. Lightweight leather hiking shoes work well. Sorels are nice too, but I find the sole to be too bulky for my liking wh
