My latest choice are a set of Merrill hiking boots with wool socks. Heaviness varies with the cold. Have a couple pair of "heavy duty" wool work socks (aka railroad socks) that are decent. Otherwise it's often merino snowboarding or skiing socks. The boots were recommended at my local REI by an employee who commutes regularly in winter. They've kept my feet warm in weather as cold as I'm willing to ride. The boots seem to hold well on the Crank Bros 50/50 that are on my winter "beater" (i.e. non-Riv) bike.
