So, all in all, it seems your hypothesis can work both ways given the right
example. The bottom line is, IMHO, use whatever OS and apps better suit the
task at hand.

cking.
I had a similar experience here at work in a development server, which
took about 2 days to fill up swap. I used the described method to find
out who was the culprit and setup a cron job every four hours to restart
the process so as to clean up the mess. The funny thing is that the same

already use LVM, it's not an option unless you want to reinstall (I did
this to start playing with it).

new partition. Finally, you can always backup, remove the current
partition, create a new (larger) partition and restore your data.

But that is just to generate the list of bad blocks. It's then up to
e2fsck to mark those blocks as bad.

use it, in pretty much the same fashion as diskettes.

If /mnt/backups wasn't mounted, then your backup will fail, but your
rootfs will still be there and keep your system running.

ou the same effect in linux. You just
have to consider if you really want to lose all that RAM while NOT using
the app. I know that it might go to swap space, but then there is no
gain with respect to not running (and probably some problems with memory
manager overhead).

Mutt does not filter itself. You can use procmail to do the filtering
and instruct mutt about which folders to check.
