Terri, this problem is usually a function of the tape recorder. You might get some improvement if you clean the heads of both the playback and record heads of the machine. A cotton swab with denatured alcohol is best for this unless you have special head cleaner stuff. Also, if you should have a

the head alignment deals with the azimuth and clarity of the over all sound of the tape. if you don't have a good alignment tape I wouldn't attempt trying to align tape heads. The best thing to hit the Internet in years - NetZero

Terri, If you haven't done so, you might want to clean and demagnetize the heads on the tape deck. Be sure to put the tape across the room when you do the demagnetizing. The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
