I'm using XP. I did as you described, and found that both primary and
secondary IDE controllers were already set to DMA If Available. That leads
me to suspect that, perhaps, that isn't the problem, after all, contrary to
Jukka's suggestion.
Perhaps, since I hear chip prices are soon to st
a correction. It has been so long sense I used 98 that I for got that you
have to press tab until you see the properties button and press the space
bar to get in to the drive properties.

drive on the ide channels. Go to device manager and right click on each
drive and go to properties. and make sure dma support is checked.

Yeah, I think they chose a stupid way to do that, relying on the keyboard
commands. I figured that behavior out by curiosity with Allinplay that the
arrows worked, and the numbers did too, how odd that was. I do like the
upper right button that closes boxes like those messages windows update pop
