I only wish there were also a way to turn off notifications about data
detecters, lists, and list items… It looks like you should be able to uncheck
the name, state, and status, but this does not work. It looks like the settings
want you to keep at least one of them on.

You can actually just click an Notifications with the up and down arrow and it
opens the Notification Center where you can turn on Do Not Disturb for 24 hours.

One way to get around these complicated keyboard issues is unloading VO from
the native Mac side. It is easy to turn off and on, and sometimes, it is much
quicker than trying to figure out key bypass commands.

You can easily change channels, volume, and much more with hot keys or through
the menu, but the built-in guide that lets you set up recordings is not
accessible.

Sorry Paul, I must have missed that message.
APH is actually interested in doing a Mac version, but that's about all I can
say about it for the moment.

Chrome works great with VO and is a very very nice browser. Once in a great
while, it is necessary to use Safari for some accessibility reason, but most of
the time, Chrome rocks.

Confusing as it is, turning off Quick Nav and using the Right Arrow to expand

It is, indeed, easy to write accessible GUI applications on the Mac in Python.
One way to do it is with WX Widgets. This provides your program standard Mac
controls that are accessible just like you see them in other programs. Check
out the WX Widgets page at python.org.

You can write them either for Linux or the Mac GUI. I would sure love to see
some of you talented coders at work on some great Mac applications.
I am still new to the Mac, but it looks like a pretty easy job to use wx
widgets and Python. You still need a good editor to write these. So far, I'm

This is actually a great idea.
I'll start the list with what I know if someone wants to post and manage it
somewhere:
Abby Fine Reader Express (OCR)
Quicken Essentials (financial)
Eclipse (programming environment)
Bean (text editor)
Open Office is somewhat useable (Office suite)

For some reason, you can still do a google search from the search widget. It
looks like it loads the exact same page of results, but doing it from the
Google page sure makes VO unhappy.

Signing in did not help for me. Resetting the browser does not seem to help
either. Bing does, but the results are so much less accurate. You can, for some
reason, use the widget to initiate a search though, and that works fine.

Just press Command+Shift+R. They should have mentioned that in the article,
too. It is a great tool to get to the meat of the page.

I am using one with a digital audio cable to the receiver, and it works
well--you get the full 5.1.
Note, I have tried using HDMI to the TV. I have TV audio going into the stereo,
but the audio from Apple TV does not get passed on to the receiver from the TV.
Also note, I cannot get HDMI input f
I get this as well on my 2012 Mac Book Pro.
After verifying I have sound with the volume keys, I can press Command+f5 four
times to revive VO.

That would be really nice, but if there is a way to prevent it from saying "new
line," I would love to know it, too. I consider this right up there with the
inability of not having a way to make it stop announcing lists and tables in a
web page as probably the two most annoying, non-productive t
Vic, here is a quick and more powerful way to move files and folders.
Go to the terminal application and learn the file and folder layout there.
You can use the mv command to do what you need in a very powerful way indeed.

I could be wrong, but I think there is some philosophical reason why Apple
doesn't want cut and paste in the Finder. I think the debate has been going on
since the introduction of the Mac back in the 80's.

Quicken Essentials works great. I don't think the other two do. They also give

One other option that also works well is to set google to open search result
links in a new window. When you finish with the window, you can use Command+,
to close that page and return to the results page with your cursor right on the

This is tricky. The most reliable way I have found is to actually click the
mouse or touch the trackpad. Weather or not you have to do that, you definitely
want to turn quick nave off in VO. Also, if nothing else works, unload VO. That
is rarely necessary though.

It is actually very accessible although there is no table support yet. It is
fast, accessible, and reliable, however and hardly ever gives the "busy"
message as Saffari does.

Your second question is a little trickier, but in general, command left and
right arrow act as Home and End. Command up and down arrow are beginning and
