No you didn't do anything wrong. I think you've definitely discovered a

Try closing the Mac mail program, and re-opening it. And see if that fixes the
problem. I have occasionally had this happen with my TWC account.

If you go under system preferences, and uncheck the mailbox, it will stay off
until you re-enable it. I hope this helps.

you may have to get out of it and then go back into it. I've even done it,
where I go to the wallet part of PayPal, and go and except it that way. Without
even using the notification. Try that and see if that works.
