Try going to Mail Settings > General, and make sure Follow Up Suggestions is
turned off.
This should prevent older messages from appearing at the top of the Inbox list.

By default, Gmail will add any email recipient to your contacts, even if you
are responding to an email message just once.
To stop this, you must access your Gmail settings online by signing into your
Gmail account, and go into your online settings.
