It could have something to do with Lion. I recall having more problems in Lion
than occurs now within Mountain Lion. Sorry it caused you more grief.

didn't work. I had the same problem again. I had to kill Mail and VO and
restart them both in order to restore functionality. In any event, moving
these mailboxes appears impossible. Any other ideas, folks?

Not sure if this works for Lion but in Mountain Lion, it worked for me every
time. Note that I'm in the New View of Mail in Mountain Lion, not classic View.

period solution, I saw the mailbox move around a bunch and come to rest where

Much reordering since ml is very random and many cant reorder with the drag and
drop shortcuts and for many who can, it works some times and not others and as
far as I can tell, no one knows why.

Absolutely! Highlight the mailbox that you want to move, then press vo+comma.
Now move to where you want to drop the mailbox, then press vo+period.
