Well, after being off this list for almost 2 months, I'm finally back
on through a G Mail account. I had similar problems with the
inadvertent muting of speech, and Erik's tiup abouyt adjusting volume
with VO Command arrows is really useful. Had no idea about that one.

speech. The odd thing is, when I checked the mute speech setting in
voiceover utility it was unchecked even though the speech was muted.

Just a tip. Turn keyboard help on when the trackpad is on, and try out
different gestures to get feedback on their functionality if you

The following is a little information for clarification.
a. Three finger double tap mutes and unmutes VO.
b Three finger tripple tap turns the screen curtin on or off.
c. a three finger single tap will tel you what page number you are on
and the number of available pages.

again it will react exactly as you posted. the way to solve this is
to again three finger double tap. this feature works great especialy
when you don't want VO to read information every so many minutes.

I found out the hard way that a certain multi finger tap will mute
speech. I think it was a 3 finger double tap. Anyway, I think it's
similar to the turn screen curtain on/off command.

The gesture that turns off speech on the iphone is a double-tap with
three fingers. I know it seems unlikely, but is it possible you did
this by accident? It's a toggle, so the next time it happens, try
doing a three-finger double-tap, and see if speech starts up again.
