DocuScan Plus is indeed an app to scan and OCR texts. It works really well, although it is expensive. It's free for a seven day trial, but $299 for a full life-time licence. It seems to detect scanners automatically and require no set up or anything. It will scan and OCR the documents at once.

Hello Joanne, I use the combination of VueScan and ABBYY FineReader for scanning and OCR on the Mac. I get excellent results from this arrangement. VueScan costs around $79 US and ABBYY FineReader around $90 US. The setup process is a bit fiddly, but once it's done, everything works smoothly.
